GVGateway.net Beta Launched

GVGateway.net (http://GVGateway.net) is a Email to SMS gateway primarily designed for Google Voice users. Most cellular services provide a gateway service that accepts email and forwards it to a cell phone as a text message (SMS). For instance if you are an AT&T customer and your cell phone number is 800-555-1212 you can send email to 8005551212@txt.att.net and it will be forward to you cell phone as a text message (SMS).

Until now there has not been such gateway for users of the free Google Voice text messaging service. GVGateway.net provides this service for any US cell phone numbers, Google Voice numbers, any number reachable through the Google Voice texting service. Users must signup and supply a Google Voice login which is used to send the text messages. Once a user has signed up they are given an email address in the form of 10_digit_phone_number@GVGateway.net. Emails to this phone number are forwarded as text messages.

For messages sent to Google Voice accounts the message is not limited to the typical 160 character limit generally imposed on text messages.

Users can signup and begin using the service which is now available as a free public beta at http://www.GVGateway.net

  1. I guess I am the first user. Here are my findings.
The received texts do not indicate who they are from. They show as being sent from the user's GV account.

Replies to the text are sent to the GV inbox, and show they were send by the user.

So basically this program sends the messages from the user's own GV account and then receives any replies to the same account.

    Maybe a beginning, I don't know.

  2. The service as it exists today is primary design to allow alerts from various service like voice mail services, and airline status alerts, etc to be sent as text messages without accumulating fees for texting.

With such messages it is generally obvious who they are from but I will look at adding a preference to include a from field.

With this type of services the need for a reply is not generally important either so I have not looked into how to include them.

  3. Is there a way to initiate text message from my email to a person without a gvgateway account. For instance, let's say I want to text Ted, but all I have is his phone number and I don't want to use the text messaging app on my phone, but use gvgatway as an outbound text to SMS service?
